WhistlePig
WhistlePig 12yo Old World Rye
WhistlePig built its reputation on a simple premise: take exceptional rye whiskey and get out of its way. The Old World takes that further, asking what happens when a 12-year 95% rye mash — already fully formed in new American oak — is divided across three of the wine world's most characterful casks: Madeira (63%), Sauternes (30%), and Port (7%). The answer is something that sits in a category largely of its own.
The Madeira drives the character — raisins, dried fig, stewed stone fruit, a savour that reads almost Scotch-like in its depth. The Sauternes brings apricot, honeyed citrus, and a delicate sweetness that lifts rather than cloaks. The Port adds just enough dark fruit and richness to round the finish without tipping into indulgence. Rye spice — the backbone of the whole thing — threads through it all: present, grounding, unmistakable. Bottled at 86 proof, it drinks with more elegance than force, which divides opinion, but suits the wine cask philosophy well. A rye for people who also love good wine, and a bottle that rewards the kind of attention most whiskey drinkers never quite bring.
